Now Hiring: Senior New Product Development Lab Technician (Fiber Optics Industry)



  • Perform product testing as described in the appropriate ASTM, ODLOG or other published specifications or test methods as required by the lab manager with no supervision
  • Perform Optical insertion loss and return loss testing and troubleshooting of fiber optics assemblies and sub-assemblies
  • Master optical polishing techniques, both machine and manual
  • Design and develop test methods and assembly processes for Research and Development projects
  • Train and coordinate the activities of any apprentice trainees assigned
  • As required, guide junior technicians through new projects
  • Interface with design and project engineers to determine test requirements and recommend process improvements
  • Develop test methods, practices and protocols used in the product-testing lab
  • Develop assembly processes based on the findings and results of testing conducted
  • Design and develop tools, fixtures and or jigs required to perform required testing
  • Interface with Manufacturing Engineering to develop assembly processes and assembly fixtures
  • Prepare reports based on the testing performed

Job Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • HS/GED required with some college level work desirable
  • 3 years minimum experience in laboratory or test-type environment
  • 1 year minimum experience in engineering (mechanical and electrical) environment
  • 6 months minimum working in Fiber optics assembly and test environment
  • Military technical training may substitute for college level course work

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience in handling optical fiber and in the use of optical fiber test equipment such as OTDR, optical power meter, back reflection meter
  • Working knowledge of CAD
  • Familiar with Military standards for testing
  • Working knowledge of electrical theory and experience in use of electrical test equipment to perform DC resistance and insulation resistance measurements
  • Proficient in soldering techniques and certification to J standards
  • Working knowledge of hydraulics
  • Knowledge of logic controllers such as those used for thermal chambers
  • Computer Literate – proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
  • Experience with computer programming is desirable
  • Basic hand tool operation and use, torque wrench
  • Use of precision measuring tools, calipers, micrometer, depth gauge
  • Self starter
